The plane, a Saab 340 operated by IBC Airways Inc. and carrying two crew members, landed safety at 12.30pm.

Fire, ambulance and police crews were on full emergency standby for the aircraft landing.

The Cayman Islands Airports Authority confirmed that the local Air Traffic Control received notification at 12 noon that the aircraft, en route to Grand Cayman from Miami, had “declared a full emergency due to the loss of one of its engines”.

“All emergency services were deployed in accordance with Air Traffic Control notification procedures,” said Caren. Thompson–Palacio, communications and marketing manager of the Airports Authority.

The emergency landing led to road closures around the airport, causing long traffic jams during lunchtime in the area. Police also blocked part of the junction at Shedden Road and North Sound Road so traffic could be diverted away from the airport.
