Fencer returns

Following a successful introductory course during the summer, Cayman Fencing in association with Purple Dragon will bring back Jean Goto from New York to instruct another fencing camp in December.

The native New Yorker started fencing at the celebrated Peter Westbrook Foundation when she was 10.

Since then Goto has trained with world class level coaches Aladar Kogler and Kornel Udvarhelyi. She attended fencing camps in Budapest and Sombathe, Hungary as well as in Monticello, NY.

Goto has medalled in eight national competitions, won her first collegiate competition (the Temple Open) and gone to the NCAAs three times, becoming an All American in her first year.

She started teaching fencing while occasionally helping out at the PWF classes on Saturdays. She has since taught at Gate Hill Day Camp, the Dwight School and privately throughout New York City and Greenwich, CT. Currently, she is part owner of Greenwich Fencing – a fencing school in Greenwich, CT.

The next fencing camp will run from Monday– Friday 14–18 December and children aged seven and up are encouraged to sign up early.

Sessions will run from 3–5pm at Purple Dragon, beside the World Gym off West Bay Road.

If there is enough interest from adults, there will be a second session running from 6–8pm.

“We had such an overwhelming response from the youngsters and adults who took part in the summer camps that we decided we had to run another one before Christmas,” Humphries said.

“If we get enough interest and commitment we will certainly make this a regular fixture on the calendar.”

The camp will consist of four days of training, learning foot work and various blade techniques with practice bouts, and end with a tournament on Friday.
