The Belford Estates Community Emergency Response Team held a CPR, first aid and heart saver certification workshop for 12 of its members this weekend.
Known for their community organisation and pre–emptive efforts to minimize loss during natural disasters, the team underwent a full day of training led by HSA Respiratory Therapist Melissa Shaw and Paramedic Jason Clayards.
According to Shaw, she and Mr Clayards conduct similar workshops for the construction industry, hotels and gyms.
The therapist said she was happy to see many residents taking learning these skills to heart, as this could translate to an increase in lives saved.
“The course is usually offered at the hospital in addition to these types of events, which we are extremely pleased to see,” she said.
Team Leader for the Belford Community Errington Webster commented, “This is an enhancement and refreshment of life saving techniques for the residents in our community.”
The team also expressed thanks to Pizza Hut for providing lunch, as well as Foster’s Food Fair IGA for breakfast on the day.
Special thanks were given to the Honourable Mark Scottland Minister for Health, who covered the cost of the workshop.
