The Tortuga Rum Company launched its year–long 25th Anniversary celebration on December 13 at its Governors Square store with balloons, party hats, free Grolsch and Caybrew beer, Tastee cocktail patties, cake (Tortuga Rum Cake, of course) and a live radio remote by Z–99. Dozens of $25 bargains and 25 per cent off special offers were found at all its retail liquor locations throughout Grand Cayman.
Monique Hamaty Simmonds, General Manager Jeremy Ebanks, and guest Werner Wenhold were on hand as Tortuga kicked off its 25th anniversary with a customer appreciation event at its Governors Square store.

The company plans to continue the festivities throughout 12 December, 2009, hosting a variety of customer appreciation days and monthly specials.
“We are proud to be celebrating a quarter–century in business in Grand Cayman,” says Robert Hamaty, who with his wife Carlene started the company on December 15, 1984.
“We want to celebrate this milestone with our customers and thank them throughout the coming year with lots of in–store specials, fun events, prizes and surprises.”
While working for Cayman Airways, the Hamatys introduced the first Cayman Islands rums, marketed as a souvenir for tourists and the island’s growing cruise passenger visitors. A few years later, they opened their first Tortuga Duty Free shop. Carlene began using Tortuga Gold Rum to make rum cakes from a 100 year old family recipe. Friends encouraged them to offer the cakes commercially and an international gourmet food business was born.
“It’s been an incredible journey. Who would have thought that some rum and a family cake recipe would lead to our multi–faceted business – serving both duty free and retail liquor customers and shipping Tortuga Rum Cakes to 70 countries around the world,” says Hamaty.
“We look forward to providing excellence to our customers for many generations to come.”
Tortuga Rum Company, Ltd. is a family owned and operated business headquartered in Grand Cayman, B.W.I. with franchise bakeries in Jamaica, Barbados and the Bahamas. It is the largest duty–free and retail liquor business in the Cayman Islands.
