The 86,000–square–foot building, which was begun in April 2005, will have Ernst & Young and Cayman National Bank as key tenants.
McAlpine and its employees and contractors logged some 650,000 safe working hours on the project. During the job, it did not have a single recordable incident, which is defined as an individual being unable to return to work the next day.
Cameron Graham, executive vice president at Dart Realty, said McAlpine was exemplary in its implementation of the health and safety regulations at the building site. Dart uses the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines for the Camana Bay development.
“With an average of about 150 workers on site each day working on a project of this complexity, this is a remarkable achievement,” he said.
Greg Hancock the project manager from Fluor Daniel Caribbean Inc. who is the safety manager for Camana Bay, said the safety record is even more notable here in Cayman.
“Here it is an achievement because of all the different cultures and philosophies your have,” he said. “It’s a major accomplishment.”
Mr. Hancock said the safety record extended to other contractors working on other projects at Camana Bay besides 62 Forum Lane. All together, he said there had 1.7 million safe working hours on the project.
“It’s everybody’s efforts that have accomplished this,” he said. “We have about 750 people [at the Camana Bay project] every day. We’ve had about 3,000 different people go through this job so far.”
On hand for the presentation to McAlpine was Department of Employment Relations Acting Director Philip Scott, who also congratulated the company for its safety record.
“Their accomplishment is worth emulating as we try to promote a health and safety culture,” he said.
