Pirates Week garners $7,000

Sunday 27th May, 2007   Posted: 23:39 CIT   (04:39 +1 GMT)

The Pirates Week Festival fundraiser, held at Casanova’s Restaurant 17 May, was attended by a group of supporters and business people and raised approximately $7,000 to help with event expenses in the festival.

The fund–raiser featured 40 valuable items, including turtle shells, a cocktail cruise for 10, an evening of chef service, down payment on solar heat installation, a bottle of 30–year–old Appleton rum, and a number of valuable coins including a 1742 gold–mounted silver drachma, states a press release.

All of the prizes were donated by businesses in support of the Festival.

Pirates Week Executive Director Dave Martins said the corporate response is critical for the festival being able to provide free downtown entertainment during the event.

“Part of our remit, as part of the Tourism Attractions Board, is to generate the money to pay for our events,” said Mr. Martins. “And this fundraiser is one of the ways we do that.”

Approximately 70 persons attended the evening, which included a full–course dinner and servings of complimentary wine.

Pirates Week is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2007, and later in the year, among the special events planned, will be the honouring of 30 individuals who have made sustained contributions to the festival over time. These individuals will be highlighted at another public event on the weekend before the festival begins.

Pirates Week in 2007 runs from 8–18 November with the usual mix of downtown shows, heritage days, landing pageant, and street dances over the 11 days. In 2008, the dates will be 6–16 November.
