Pirates Week 10k 2006

Tuesday 21st November, 2006   Posted: 15:00 CIT   (20:00 GMT)

Overcast skies, a few raindrops, and lots of wind did not deter a large number of runners, walkers, and pram pushers from gathering for the annual Pirates Week 10K – Out To Hell And Back.

Over one hundred and twenty visitors and residents rose early on Sunday to assemble for the trek to and from the devil’s domain.

Not surprisingly,Marius Acker took off in his usual “Catch me if you can” fashion, running as if the devil himself were at his heels.Leading from start to finish, he overcame the blustery challenge to post a winning mark of 36 minutes, 12 seconds. Experienced local standout Mark Hydes took runnerup honours in 38:36.

A group of running friends from Oklahoma have made the Pirates Week 10K an annual

fixture on their competition schedule, and each year they snag a number of awards.

Ron Wall is a member of this formidable set, and his 38:46 was good for third place overall.

Donna Oxley also hails from Oklahoma, and she led the ladies field while finishing 15th overall, clocking 44:16.Second place went to Beth Schreader at 44:53, with Gill Comins

crossing the line at 46:37 to haul in third place honours for the ladies.

Samuel Muhlangi in fourth place overall at 39:21, closed out the under 40–minute performers.

Deeann Foster outran sister Kadeen to lead the teenage entrants.

Following the action, participants relaxed on the beach and seaside restaurant at the Courtyard by Marriott, where breakfast was enjoyed by all, and awards were presented.

In a spinoff of Pirates Week, some age group awards from the Cayman Glassblowing Studio featured “Parrots Week” jewelry replicas of the Cayman Parrot.

A cornucopia of random prizes covered a wide range of offerings. The Oklahoma contingent not only went home with a number of performance awards, they also donated some great random prizes. New local companies Cay–Puzzles and Cayman Taffy, were also among the donors.

Ken Krys , from major race sponsor RSM Cayman Islands, and several other members of that company completed the running event. The hydration provided

By EVIAN was greatly appreciated, as was the breakfast presented by Courtyard Marriott..
